The Rule of Thirds

One of the most fundamental ‘rules’ of creating engaging photographs (or art) is the Rule of Thirds.

As the name implies, we examine our subject within a third of the entire scene. The idea here is to create an entry point for the audience that allows the viewer to explore the rest of the photo.
